DICTIONARIES

Dictionaries are lists of words deemed correctly spelled. MapSpeller searches those dictionaries to determine is the word being proofed is correctly spelled and to gather a list of replacement suggestions if it's not. MapSpeller supports multiple types of dictionaries to optimize the user experience:

System

System dictionaries are also called language or culture dictionaries. They typically contain around 100,000 words and are in a compressed format.

They must be licensed from Edgetech America, Inc. The number of available dictionaries and their languages depend on the edition of MapSpeller that is licensed and the culture of the operating system installation.

They are not editable.

Corporate Corporate dictionaries typically reside on the corporate network and are accessible to all MapSpeller users. They may contain uncommon words and acronyms whose spelling has been approved at the corporate level and should be used in all publications and data.

They can't be edited from within MapSpeller to keep their integrity. However, organizations may set procedures to periodically allow dictionary administrators to manually update the corporate dictionaries.

Specialized   Specialized dictionaries typically contain words specific to a profession or industry, for example foresters or GIS professionals have their own specialized vocabulary. Such dictionaries may be used by a single individual and be stored on his/her PC or they may managed in a way similar to corporate dictionaries.

Personal Personal dictionaries are designed to let individual users save words that they deem correctly spelled so those words would not constantly be flagged as potential errors. They can also be used to guarantee that some specific replacements will be suggested for misspelled words.

They are called personal or user dictionaries because they are owned and managed by an individual MapSpeller user and don't impact others. They will roam with the owner.

Danger Unlike all the other types of dictionaries, the purpose of danger dictionaries is to avoid words that are actually correctly spelled. Typically, such words are embarrassing substitutions for the intended words. For example, the word "pubic" may be a typo for "public", "Abut" for "About".

Danger dictionaries are customizable. MapSpeller distributes very small danger dictionaries (in English only) or danger dictionary templates that MapSpeller users can populate.

Third-Party Third-party personal dictionaries are personal dictionaries created by other applications such as Microsoft Word or Windows Mail. As long as they follow the MapSpeller dictionary format and their third-party license allows for it, they can be shared or imported by MapSpeller. MapSpeller will not edit such dictionaries directly.

LOCATIONARIES (Spatial Dictionaries. U.S. Patent No. 7,681,126)

Locationaries are designed to proof words which have spellings that are valid only in parts of the world. Such words could be geographic names such as the names of streets, places, buildings, but they can be any word that has a limited geographic area of validity. In English for example, "color" may be a valid word when placed over the USA but incorrect over the UK where "colour" would be correct.

A single multilingual Locationary template is provided with MapSpeller. Additional Locationaries can be added and shared if they are in shapefile format.

Please contact Edgetech America, Inc. if you would like to set up an ArcGIS Server Locationary service.
