   Manually Editing MapSpeller Dictionaries

MapSpeller Personal, Danger, Enterprise and Specialized Dictionaries

Before considering editing personal or danger dictionaries manually with Notepad, users should first consider:

  1. Editing personal and danger dictionaries using MapSpeller built-in dialogs
  2. Importing third-party personal dictionaries such as those of Microsoft Word or Windows Mail using the MapSpeller import dialog.

The personal, danger, Enterprise and Specialized Dictionaries share the same format.

The first line of a MapSpeller personal dictionary typically contains the dictionary language identifier. Each line thereafter corresponds to a word entry. The line syntax is as follows:

  • A word of reference. If this word is deemed correctly spelled, it may stand on its own on its line.
  • Followed by a TAB character (from the Tab key)
  • Followed by a command letter in lowercase:
    • i. This indicates that the preceding word is deemed correctly spelled. It is optional and is not followed by another word. This letter should not be used in danger dictionaries.
    • c. This letter indicates that the mandatory word that follows it is to be offered as a replacement suggestion to the first word on the line. This letter should only be used in danger dictionaries.
  • If the command calls for another word, that word should directly follow (without space)

If the line is at the bottom of the dictionary, make sure to hit Enter to create a blank line at the bottom.

Dictionary Names

MapSpeller automatically creates personal and danger dictionaries in the user's Windows profiles the first time a culture (language) is used. One such dictionary for each culture used. The personal and danger dictionary names are made by appending the following elements:
  • The string "User_" or "Danger_" for personal and danger dictionaries, respectively
  • The primary dictionary culture
  • The extension ".dic".

If a user with the XYZ login selects the American English as the primary culture, the name of the related personal dictionary would be: User_English (USA).dic; the danger dictionary would be named Danger_English (USA).dic.

Enterprise and Specialized Dictionaries can have any non-reserved name. MapSpeller dialogs will list files with a ".dic" extension.

Dictionary Location*

Personal and danger dictionaries are located at different places, based on the operating system version:

  • In Windows 7 or Vista in: C:\Users\XYZ\AppData\Roaming\Edgetech America\MapSpeller
  • In Windows XP in: C:\Documents and Settings\XYZ\Application Data\Edgetech America\MapSpeller

Enterprise and Specialized Dictionaries can be located anywhere that can be reached with a file system dialog.

MapSpeller System Dictionaries

They are also called language or culture dictionaries. They are not editable.

Important Notes

  • Dictionaries are case sensitive.
  • Words should be sorted alphabetically in the dictionary to optimize spell checking speed.
  • Should users want to see correctly spelled language words in the Potential Errors dialog, users should edit their danger dictionaries instead of their personal dictionaries.
* To see personal dictionaries in Windows Explorer, the latter needs to be set to show hidden files.

** Only edit MapSpeller dictionaries with MapSpeller or Notepad. Do not use other word processors, as they may insert invisible characters that would corrupt the dictionaries.
