Version 4.0

Starting ArcMap® with Elevated Administrator Rights

Starting with Windows Vista, Microsoft introduced User Account Controls (UAC).

Therefore, if you have Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, ArcMap must be started with elevated administrator rights to request and install MapSpeller software keys. If you are using Windows XP, this doesn't apply to you and you can start ArcMap your regular way.

To run ArcMap with elevated administrator rights,

  1. Log in Windows as an administrator
  2. Right-click on the ArcMap item in the Windows Start menu to call a context menu
  3. Select "Run as administrator" from that context menu as illustrated below

Important Notes

  • Once the MapSpeller software is registered, you should close ArcMap and restart it the regular way (without elevated rights), regardless of the operating system you use. ArcMap only needs elevated rights when requesting or installing the initial MapSpeller software keys or maintenance keys.
  • Requesting and registering additional users doesn't require elevated rights under any operating system. This is a separate step from registering the MapSpeller extension.
