MapSpeller for ArcGIS: Spell Checking Grouped Graphics

Ungrouping Graphics

Regrouping Graphics

MapSpeller for ArcGIS doesn't currently spell check grouped graphics directly. For the text in grouped graphics to be spell checked, the graphics must be ungrouped completely and the spell checker run on the resulting graphics. Users have at least two procedures to choose from, each with pros and cons.

First Procedure: Ungrouping a Copy of the Document

This option is preferable if there are a lot of grouped graphics that would be hard or time-consuming to rebuild.

  1. Users can make a copy the project (mxd) file (for example using File>Saving As),
  2. Ungroup the copy's graphics,
  3. Spell check the copy. The Potential Typos dialog would give them a list of potential errors with suggested corrections.
  4. Manually make the corrections to the original document.
  5. Delete the document copy once the process is over.

Alternative Procedure: Ungrouping the Actual Document

This procedure should only be considered if the graphics can easily be regrouped at the end of the process. The advantage of this method over the first one is that corrections can be made directly from the MapSpeller Potential Typos dialog.

  1. For safety, make a copy of the project before undoing graphics
  2. Ungroup graphics. To make it easy to rebuild the grouped graphics, instead of ungrouping all the groups at once, ungroup a single group into its individual graphics.
  3. Run the spell checker
  4. From the MapSpeller Potential Typos dialog, correct the errors
  5. Regroup the previously ungrouped graphics the way they were
  6. Repeat the process for all grouped graphics if necessary (see step 2).
