Although MapSpeller for ArcGIS doesn't currently spell check
annotation feature classes
directly, they can be checked and corrected indirectly by turning
them first into annotation graphics, spell checking those and bookmarking the errors. The bookmark can then be used to manually edit
the annotations in their feature classes. Here
is the procedure to follow, with ArcMap open, and the Data View
active with the annotation layer drawn: |
|
 |
- Create a New Annotation Group from the menu of the Graphics
toolbar
- Using the Select Element tool from the Tools toolbar, select
all the annotations feature (from the annotation layer) in the
data frame
- Copy the text into the clipboard (CTRL+C or choose Copy from
the Edit menu of the Menubar)
- Paste the text into the map display (CTRL+V or chose Paste
from the Edit menu of the Menubar). ArcMap pastes the text in
the new target annotation group as annotation graphics (also
called graphic text). It might be of different dimension than
the corresponding annotation features.
- Because ArcMap positions the pasted text off the
corresponding annotations from the layer, move all the new
annotation graphics back over on top of their corresponding text
from the annotation layer.
- Run the MapSpeller spell checker with the Layout's Focus Map
as target
- If there are errors, they will appear in the Potential Typos
dialog box
- Right-click on each one of them to take note of the correct
spelling, and
- Select Bookmark from the context menu of each typo. This
creates a bookmark around the annotation graphic containing the
word in question.
- Using standard ArcMap editing procedures,
- Zoom to the bookmark of each typo.
- You may have to zoom & pan to find the corresponding
annotation feature to adjust for the change is size that may
have occurred with the pasting earlier
- Edit the attribute value of the corresponding annotation feature
from the Attribute dialog of the Editor toolbar.
