Instructing MapSpeller to Warn the User If Certain Words are Present

Danger dictionaries enable MapSpeller to warn the user when correctly-spelled words that do not typically appear on maps are present. Those words are often embarrassing substitutions for other words. Such substitutions include sight for site, pubic for public, worm for warm.

MapSpeller uses one of the following danger dictionary files, depending on which system language is selected: Danger_English (USA).dic and Danger_None.dic. The latter doesn't contain any word by default. The default content of Danger_English (USA).dic is displayed on the figure to the left. It's up to the user to manually manage the content of their danger dictionaries.

When a MapSpeller user account is created or the first time a language is used, the MapSpeller master danger dictionaries are copied from the MapSpeller Program Data directory into that user's Windows profile. The user version is the version that MapSpeller uses when spell checking.

Danger dictionaries are automatically used when spell checking and can't be turned off from the MapSpeller Options dialog. To disable this functionality, empty your copy of the relevant danger dictionary.

Default location of the system's danger dictionaries:

  • Windows XP
    • MapSpeller 9.2: C:\Program Files\Edgetech America\MapSpeller
    • MapSpeller 9.3: C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Application Data\Edgetech America\MapSpeller
  • Windows Vista: C:\ProgramData\Edgetech America\MapSpeller

Default location of user XYZ's danger dictionaries:

  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\XYZ\Application Data\Edgetech America\MapSpeller
  • Windows Vista: C:\XYZ\AppData\Roaming\Edgetech America\MapSpeller

Note that to see these folders in Windows Explorer, you need to set it so it shows hidden files.

Users can edit their danger dictionaries using Windows Notepad. The first line with the #LID string contains the language code. It shouldn't be changed. On the next lines, add the danger word, a tab, then the letter c directly followed by the suggestion to be offered. For optimum processing speed, those danger words should be listed in alphabetical order with uppercase letters taking precedence over lowercase ones. Dictionaries are case-sensitive.

If you don't want to be asked for the default substitution each time MapSpeller encounters the danger word, remove its line from the danger dictionary.

The danger dictionary is a dictionary that is read before any other by the MapSpeller spelling engine; the language dictionary follows and finally the personal dictionary.
