MapSpeller Personal Dictionaries

Personal dictionaries are used to complement system dictionaries with words that users deemed correctly spelled. Personal dictionaries can be edited while system dictionaries cannot.

MapSpeller Personal Dictionary Names & Locations

MapSpeller automatically creates personal dictionaries in Windows user profiles. A set of dictionaries are created per user; one for each language used. Personal dictionary names are made by appending the following elements:

  1. The string "User_"
  2. The language option selected from system language combo box in the MapSpeller Options dialog (such as "English (USA)")
  3. The extension ".dic".

If a user with the XYZ login selects the American English system dictionary, the name of the related personal dictionary would be: User_English (USA).dic, and it would be located*:

  • In Windows XP in: C:\Documents and Settings\XYZ\Application Data\Edgetech America\MapSpeller
  • In Windows Vista or Windows 7 in: C:\Users\XYZ\AppData\Roaming\Edgetech America\MapSpeller

MapSpeller Personal Dictionary Format

MapSpeller personal dictionaries are formatted in the following way**:

  • The first line typically contains the dictionary language identifier
  • Each line thereafter corresponds to a word entry
  • The general line syntax is as follows:
    1. A word of reference. If this word is deemed correctly spelled, it may stand on its own on its line.
    2. Followed by a TAB character (from the Tab key)
    3. Followed by a command letter
    4. If the command calls for another word, that word should directly follow (without space).

The command letters are the lowercase letter:

  • i. This indicates that the preceding word is deemed correctly spelled. It is optional and is not followed by another word.
  • c. This letter indicates that the mandatory word that follows it is to be offered as a replacement suggestion to the first word on the line.
Important Notes

* To see personal dictionaries in Windows Explorer, the latter needs to be set to show hidden files.

** Only edit MapSpeller dictionaries with MapSpeller or Notepad. Do not use other word processors as they may insert invisible characters that would corrupt the dictionaries.

  • Dictionaries are case sensitive.
  • Words should be sorted alphabetically in the dictionary to optimize spell checking speed.
