Migrating to ArcView GIS 8:
Course Description

LENGTH: Two days.

OVERVIEW

This two-day course introduces ArcView GIS 3.x users to the features and architecture of ArcView 8, ArcEditor 8 and ArcInfo 8. Students learn how to use the new Windows-based applications - ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox - and explore how these applications work together.

Participants learn how ArcView GIS 3.x  terminology and features relate to the new terminology and features of ArcView 8 and ArcGIS. They also learn how to create, edit, and georeference spatial data as well as manipulate tabular data, query a GIS database, and present data clearly and efficiently using maps and charts. The class time is divided between lectures and hands-on exercises.

Many of the topics covered in this course are similar to those in Introduction to ArcGIS I (for ArcView 8, ArcEditor 8, and ArcInfo 8). Therefore, attendees who complete Migrating to ArcView 8 should not enroll in Introduction to ArcGIS I .

AUDIENCE

Migrating from ArcView GIS 3.x to ArcView 8 is for ArcView GIS 3.x users who want to learn ArcView 8.

GOALS

  • Display feature and tabular data
  • Georeferenced spatial data
  • Query features using logical expressions
  • Find features using spatial relationships
  • Edit spatial and attribute data
  • Import features into a geodatabase
  • Produce maps, reports, and graphs

Prerequisites and recommendations

Registrants should have taken Introduction to ArcView GIS (3.x) or have at least three to six months of recent experience using ArcView GIS 3.x. Knowledge of ArcView GIS 3.x terms and functionality is assumed.

Experienced GIS professionals using prior versions of ArcInfo and/or ArcView should have no difficulty taking the ArcGIS II course right after one of the ArcGIS level 1 classes. Beginners may want to schedule both classes a few months apart to give them time to absorb the material.
